It was very difficult to get a major music company to listen to a tape you mailed to them. They would return them marked, "unsolicited mail."
But, I was determined to be heard.
And not by some dumb music company that makes you pay for them either.
I wanted Atlantic Records.
I was working at The Pacific Coast Performing Art Center in the costume department then. (Before I had the nerve to go on stage.) LOL
I watched the PCPA construct stage parts out of light weight materials so they could chante the stage during short breaks.
They used a type of foam much like what you find in old couches. (I learned a lot at the PCPA and eventually earned a degree in theatre arts.)
I devised a plan for multiple doors to open for me, Atlantic Records here I come.
My father advised me that the Vice President of music companies might have more time to hear my songs.
His name was Paul Cooper, Vice President of Atlantic Records.
Companies tend to have a six (6) month budget plan on all projects.
Paul Cooper was the man I wanted
to hear my songs and I wasn't going to let "unsolicited mail." to be marked on my recording packages ever again.
In my little backyard, I cut out a large circle from some thrift store foam. I painted it copper with two (2) cans of spray paint. I made a large penny. I then simple painted my stage name across the middle, "Peggy Penny."
My information at the bottom, nice and neat.
The top left was intentionally blank to glue the postage. I painted the address with Mr. Cooper's name and title respectfully.
I prepared my "Annual" Package for Atlantic Records and went to the post office just as cheery as I could be. I wanted them mailed at the same time, the annual package to be signed for and a large copper penny.
There at the little home town post office, the lady looked confused at the large penny to be mailed. "You can't mail a circle, it has to be a square or in a box."
